Born in Pennsylvania, David Reed moved to Hilo, Territory of Hawaii, in 1958 at age 8. His father, Stephen, had accepted a position as an engineer with Hilo Sugar Company. His mother, Frances, became the children's librarian at Hilo Library. David attended Haaheo, Riverside, and Hilo Union Elementary Schools and Hilo Intermediate before leaving Hawaii to study at Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts from 1969-71. Following graduation he attended UH Manoa from 1968-69 and UH Hilo from 1969-71. David joined the family business, Petroglyph Press, in 1971 and became president and manager upon his parent's retirement in 1974. Following their marriage in 1976, his wife Christine became his partner in the business. Under their management, Petroglyph Press has grown from a small print shop to encompass three separate operations: Petroglyph Press Printing, Petroglyph Press Books, and Basically Books, a retail book store.
Over the course of more than 35 years in the printing and publishing fields, David has developed an expertise in most aspects of the trade. He currently works full time supervising production and sales in the printing operation and new product development for the publishing house.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Christine Reed came to Hilo in 1972 on a vacation. She immediately fell in love with the scent of rain and the warmth of life in Hawaii and decided to stay. Within a year she met David and became a part of the Reed family. In addition to working in the family business, Christine attended UH Hilo, taking classes in Apparel Design, General Education, and Agriculture. She was actively engaged in real estate for attention full-time to Petroglyph Press. As the business and its focus evolved and changed there were many jobs to learn, and Christine has experienced all aspects of the business at one time or another. Most procedures were learned by experience, with some help from various seminars and workshops over the years. Today, Christine's primary areas of responsibility are the management of retail operations, marketing, correspondence, and record keeping.
